Preventing the Flow of Crime Guns into Impacted Communities: A Prosecutor’s Role
Prosecutors have a unique and vital role in preventing gun violence, and can increase their impact by contributing to supply-side strategies. Despite the fact that 5 percent of gun dealers are responsible for 90 percent of crime guns, most efforts to prevent gun violence in impacted communities solely focus on addressing the demand for firearms. America’s gun violence epidemic requires a comprehensive and meaningful approach that must also address the supply-side, specifically holding the gun industry and dealers accountable who contribute to and profit from gun violence in cities around the country. By coupling existing intervention and prevention efforts, with holding gun dealers accountable and effectuating behavior change in the gun industry, local communities could experience a reduction in homicide and shooting rates in even the most impacted neighborhoods. A supply-side approach is a critical aspect of a comprehensive public health approach to reducing gun violence.
